What is acupuncture??
Acupuncture is a practice of inserting needles into various points throughout the body. It is a practice based in China that began over 2,000 years ago. it has been known to prevent, diagnose and treat disease, as well as promote overall well-being. the points used are located on channels known as meridians and these meridians govern the flow of energy (known as qi) throughout the body. These points can also be inserted at points off of meridians (known as ashi points) that are tender points of discomfort, such as trigger points.
How do it work??
The points placed throughout the body each have specific meaning and each channel they are associated with also has a specific meaning. Dr. Melissa will determine which points are best based on your symptoms, past medical history, current presentation and demeanor. These points balance the channels- whether associated with an internal organ or musculoskeletal ailment.
Research has shown that acupuncture needles influence adenosine, an amino acid that becomes active in the skin after an injury to ease pain.
What if I hate needles? Is it painful? are the needles reused??
The needles used in acupuncture are as thin as a hair and are solid, instead of hollow needles like with a blood draw or a vaccine. Acupuncture should not be painful. There may be mild discomfort depending on the needle manipulation, but this should dissipate with time. The side effects of needles are mild but can range from fatigue, nausea, mild bruising, soreness or mild bleeding. usually side effects are helping clear out the condition at hand. The needles are sterile needles that are used only one time. They are disposed after use into a sharps container.
How often do I need acupuncture??
The duration of acupuncture is determined based on your condition. Many people need a minimum of 6 sessions, but this number can vary. Most patients receive acupuncture on a regular basis (such as 1x a month) in order to maintain the benefits, but this all depends on the particular condition.
